Commanders Call

At our October meeting, we honored the accomplishments of our P-15’s Baseball team. Although none of the players were able to attend, Coach Wally Jones spoke of the great season the P-15’s had this past year, competing in both the State and Regional playoffs. Coach Jones went on to praise the program as a youth program that teaches the ideals of integrity, fair play and sportsmanship. Post 15 will host the 2012 Regional Playoffs next year. Jimmy Hodge, Athletics Officer, asked for members who would like to help, to contact him and sign up for the Regional committee.

Mel Curtis, Fair Manager, recognized all of the members of the Fair Committee who helped to make our 2011 Sumter County Fair by American Legion Post 15 a great success. Although attendance was down a bit, the weather was great and everyone had a super time. The Auxiliary did a wonderful job decorating and staffing the Legion Booth, winning a blue ribbon for their efforts, and spreading the Legion message to veterans who attended the Fair.

Second Vice-Commander Pat Sexton reported that our current membership stands at 492 paid members. Our goal for the year is 740 members.

Buddy Suitt tells me that the latest brick order should arrive in a few weeks, if you need a brick, future orders will be processed in smaller groups to speed up the process.

Tony Myers, Chairman of the Programs Committee tells me that our program for November’s meeting is a guest speaker, Everette Davis who will speak about WWII events.

At the end of the October meeting, I gave a brief explanation of the past disputes between the Post and the Fair. All of these disputes have been settled, and I have accepted the resignation of the Board of Directors of the Fair Corporation. An interim board and committee has made corrections to all necessary legal Issues. I have appointed a new Fair Committee. This new Committee is just the foundation. If any member of the Post is interested in working on this committee, please contact me. At our November meeting, the membership will ratify new Fair By-Laws, approved by the interim board. The membership will also, ratify by up or down vote, the new Board of Directors of the Sumter County Fair by American Legion Post 15, Inc.

Commander, R. David Player

From the Adjutant

Our Post Service Officer, Paul Siegel is available by appointment to assist veterans. You can reach him at Home: 494-3379 or cell: 795-5555. Paul is looking for someone to train as a Service Officer...he needs help. Of all the great things that Post 15 does for the community, the Service Office is the one area where we offer positive and direct assistance to all veterans. We receive hundreds of calls each year from veterans

or their family members requesting assistance on benefit matters. If you think you can help, please let us know.

On November 11th we celebrate Veterans Day. At 11:00 Am on the lawn of the county court house, citizens will gather to pay respect to veterans who served in the armed forces of our nation. The Sumter County Veterans Association has put together a program to include speakers, honor guard, and veterans groups. Please attend and wear your legion cap.

Adjutant, Nick Nero
