October 2009

Commanders Call
As
fall arrives, it's time to remember those who have served our
county. The 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month the
bells will toll to mark the end of the Great War. On the lawn
of the Sumter County Courthouse, Veterans from all wars will gather
to show respect and to remember the service of all Veterans.
Veterans day is a National Holiday to
honor those who served. The American Legion and Post 15
remember and assist veterans everyday. Membership is the
corner stone that supports all activities of the Legion. Our
membership has reached 60% of our goal for 2009-2010. If you
haven't yet renewed yours, take a moment to do so. Also reach
out to Vets you know and invite them to join.
The Sumter County Fair just
finished its 2009 run. I would like to extend a thank you to
all Legionnaires that helped to make it a successful family friendly
event. The Sumter County Fair Association supports Post 15 in
many way. More than 8,000 dollars worth of free tickets were
sent to members who paid their dues before the fair, and the post
has saved more than $10,000 on monthly meals paid for by the Fair.
At our September meeting, Post 15 was
recognized by the Department of South Carolina for our outstanding
support of children and youth programs. Again this year, the
children and youth committee will distribute Halloween dug awareness
pamphlets to first and second graders in schools throughout the
county.
Our past Historian Nick Nero was again
recognized by the Department for his excellent work on the post
history book. Jack Rinehart, our post webmaster, has been
elected as Post Historian to replace Nick Nero. All committees
should support Jack and provide him with details of your committee
activities.
Saturday, December 19th, Post 15 will
ring the bell for the Salvation Army at both Wal-mart entrances.
Contact first Vice Commander Mel Curtis if you wish to assist.
The Sumter County Veterans Association
in support of the
USMC Reserve Toys-for-Tots program
will pass the hat at our November meeting. Please support this
worthwhile program.
Our own Veterans Walk of Honor has been
delayed, however Ed Slocum explained at the October meeting that we
have received the first shipment of bricks, and will aim for
Memorial Day, 2010 as a dedication date. Contact Ed if you
wish to purchase a brick.
Tony Myers, our program chairman has
informed me that our speaker for November will be Major General
Robert Livingston.
From the Adjutant
We are
adding a TV with cable hookup to our coffee bar area. Now you
can enjoy coffee with other vets and catch up on the news at the
same time. The coffee bar is open 9-4 on Mondays and
Thursdays.
I have
received some new Legion uniform hats, the price is $40. I
also have a few Legion logo items, i.e. license pates, ball caps and
decals.
Contact me
for all membership related matters, newsletter problems, or general
Legion information.
Adjutant, Nick Nero
From our Chaplain
No post
everlasting at our last meeting.
