Sumter Post 15 November Newsletter

Commanders Call
As the year draws to a
close and we prepare to celebrate this joyous season, take a moment
to remember all of our brave service members serving our great
nation. Their sacrifices allow us the freedom to celebrate this
holiday season according to the faith of our choice.
As Veterans, we have
served in the past and continue to serve our community, State and
Nation. The American Legion was formed by veterans to help veterans,
and to serve our community. Post 15 is dedicated to this principle
as we strive to “inculcate a sense of individual obligation to
the community, state and nation;
“
One of the ways we are
able to do this is through a strong membership. At 70% of our goal
we are a bit behind were we should be at this time of year. All of
us need to reach out to veterans in our community and invite them to
join us.
It was a cold and rainy
day in Sumter, and the Veterans Day ceremonies were cancelled.
Across the Country, Americans gathered at the 11th
hour, of the 11th
day, of the 11th
month to show respect and to remember the service of
all Veterans.
Major
General Robert E. Livingston Jr. from Central Command was our
guest speaker at our October meeting. General Livingston gave an
in-depth briefing and slide presentation explaining the
complexities of the war in Afghanistan and the responsibilities
of Central Command in the area. He went on to explain the
counterinsurgency activities we are involved in to stop the
Taliban and other terrorists from taking retribution on the
people of Afghanistan and reestablishing a terrorist state.
Rodgers Greenawalt,
Chairman of the Americanism Committee stated they are preparing for
the annual American Legion Oratorical competition. Students from
around the county will vie for a chance to demonstrate their
speaking skills and to represent Post 15 in state wide and possibly
nationwide competition
Robin Webster reported
that the boy scouts were having an overnight campout at the scout
hut. Several scouts were at the meeting selling Christmas wreaths as
a fund raiser. Contact Robin if you want to purchase one and support
the scouts.
Saturday,
December 19, Post 15 will ring the bell for the Salvation Army at
both Wal-Mart entrances. Contact first vice Commander Mel Curtis if
you wish to assist.
On Pearl Harbor day,
the 7th of
December we will hold our December meeting. Members and their
spouses are invited to join us. There will be no business meeting.
Tony Myers, our program chairman has informed me that our
entertainment will be the New Generation.
From the Adjutant
Ard’s TV & appliances
donated a TV for our coffee bar area. Now you can enjoy coffee, tea
or hot chocolate with other vets and catch up on the news at the
