Commanders Call

As commander, I
want to wish all members and their families a very joyful and
prosperous new year. As we begin the New Year we resolve to continue
our support of all those who have served this great country and to
foster patriotism in the younger generations to come.
Our December meeting
was our Christmas program, no business was conducted. As has been
our tradition we passed the hat for the Salvation Army, nearly $750
was collected. On December 19th
members also rang the bell at Wal-Mart.
On December 6th
post 15 entered a float in the Sumter Christmas Parade. Thanks to
all members and auxiliary who helped to make it a great success. The
Boy Scouts and the Cub Scouts also participated.
Approximately 375
members and guests attended our Christmas program and enjoyed a
delicious turkey dinner with all the fixings. The Auxiliary did and
excellent job of decorating the Legion Home for this festive event.
The music group the Last Generation provided excellent entertainment
January first is the
past-due date for dues. More than 150 members have failed to re-new
their membership. We are currently at 70% and behind were we should
be. Everyone needs to reach out to veterans and invite them to join
post 15. According to records at Department, less than 10% of
eligible veterans in South Carolina are members of the Legion.
The Mid-Winter
Conference will be held at Myrtle Beach January 22, 23 & 24, 2010.
Please contact Adjutant Nick Nero at (803) 495-3717 if you plan on
attending so that he can send in your Pre-registration.
Our program Chairman,
Tony Myers tells me that the program for January will be the Boy
Scouts. Post 15 will present the third $5,000 check to the Henry
Sheeler District of the Boy Scouts. Post 15 pledged $20,000
to support the boys.
Commander,
Henry Holland
From the Adjutant
I want to take this
opportunity to offer a special thank you to several people who have
worked extremely hard this past year to support post 15 and the
veterans we serve. First off, our Chaplain, Charles Clanton has
spent untold hours offering support and comfort to ailing members
and the families of deceased members. Our Service Officer, Paul
Siegel has served all veterans seeking assistance, nearly 800
contacts, appointments and calls this past year. Paul’s wife, Diane
Siegel has been working each Monday and Thursday at our Coffee Shop,
offering up coffee, tea, hot chocolate and hospitality to all
visitors. Finally, a very special thanks to member Jim Morris. Jim
has worked tirelessly making the Legion Home better and better.
