Commanders Call

At our January meeting we presented a check for 5,000 dollars to Scout master Bobby Barns who accepted this third installment of our pledge of $20,000 to the Henry Sheeler District of the Boy Scouts. Several scouts and their families were recognized. Bobby Barns, scout master of Troop 339 was our guest speaker. He talked about the value of the Boy Scout program in building leaders for our future. He highlighted some of the plans the troop has for the upcoming summer including trips to Texas and Tennessee. Wendy Schaare announced that the Cub Scouts were planning a Spaghetti dinner fund raiser on February 27th at the Legion Home. Tickets are 5 dollars and both take out and eat in meals will be available.

Our February program will be Law & Order. We will recognize the Police Officer, Firefighter, Corrections Officer, and Emergency Medical Technician of the year. Each have been nominated by their respective departments and selected by our Public Safety committee. Each selectee will receive an engraved plaque, certificate, and 500 dollars. Our guest speaker will be Retired Assistant Columbia Fire Chief Ed Goff.

Commander, Henry Holland

From the Adjutant

Our membership stands at 610. More than 150 current members have not yet paid their dues. We are only 72% of our goal for membership. Our biggest down fall continues to be the lack of new members. If the post is to continue to thrive we must all work hard to bring in new members. Active duty members are eligible and young gulf war veterans are the strong active members we should work to sign-up.

At the close of the February meeting, we will take a 10 minute break to excuse our guests. I will then present a financial briefing to the membership outlining our FY2009 expenditures and our budget plans for FY2010.

Adjutant, Nick Nero

From our Chaplain

Post everlasting since our last meeting:

Monroe Brown, Woodrow Brown, Wendell T. Parrott, Robert T. Brown, W. Burke Watson and Marion B. Hanna
