American Legion Auxiliary Unit 15

Hello ALA Unit 15 Ladies!

The Auxiliary meeting will be held March 1st, Monday, dinner with dessert will be served at 6:30 p.m. in the Unit 15 Auxiliary Room.More volunteers are needed at the Sumter Veterans Clinic.  The hours are Monday through Friday, 8-12 only 4 hours a day. If interested please call Fay Cook, 775-5768.

Unit 15 VA & R Committee members, along with the Shaw Airman, visited the Vets in local nursing homes handing out gifts for Valentine’s Day on February 12th. Thanks to Ann Edwards, Chairman, and all of those that put together and participated in the Valentine visit!

Sara Jernigan, Scholarship Chairman, is asking for the scholarship nominees (Junior Members for their first year of college) to get their paperwork submitted.  Shirley Patterson will be helping Sara out with this year's scholarships.  Per our Unit 15 Standing Rules: selected Junior Members includes a requirement that each applicant be a member of the Unit 15 Auxiliary for 3 years before being selected and a commitment to remain a member of the Auxiliary for 4 years after selection. The Scholarship is a gift from the Unit as opposed to a loan and is paid directly to the selected applicant’s College or University.

Mark your calendars for Poppies May 14-15, Chairman again this year will be Nancy Webster. Please help by signing up to help for a couple of hours…we really need your help.

Congratulations to Libby Ortmann for being named Teacher of the Year, District 17!

Irene LePage, Education Chairman, will still be collecting zip-lock bags filled with school supplies in support of “Give 10 to Education” ALA Program. The collected supplies will be donated to a local elementary school. Please fill your zip-lock bag with at least ten of the following school supply items and bring them to the meeting: pencils flat & regular, washable markers, erasers, crayons, scissors, glue sticks, wide lined paper, or a ream of copy paper. Please include your name and a list of the supplies you donated in the zip-lock bag.

Nancy Webster, Leadership Chairman, will be conducting another ALA Leadership Correspondence Course Class before the Unit 15 meeting at 3p.m. It’s quick and easy!

Nancy Jordan will be collecting expired and current manufacturers coupons to be sent to service members stationed overseas; so don’t forget to bring in your clipped coupons.

Also, do not forget to bring in your soup can labels for education.

Canned goods will again be collected at the monthly meeting for the Christian Charities.

Please mail in your ALA dues, $20 for Seniors and $5 for Juniors, if you have not done so. Send to: ALA Unit 15, P.O. Box 2174, Sumter, S.C. 29151.

-Looking forward to seeing everyone at the meeting! Connie Suitt, ALA Unit 15 President
